Gerald Laird on the Block

The Rangers will be looking to trade Gerald Laird in the offseason and Steve Adams from MLB Trade Rumors think the Yankees could be interested. The Rangers are looking for pitching.

I don't like the idea unless Posada absolutely can't catch and they're desperate. Laird is 28 which means he should be in his peak years and he`s just not really that good. Last year he hit like Jose Molina and he can't field nearly as well.

On the other hand, I would be much more interested in Taylor Teagarden or Jarrod Saltalamachia. Either one could be the catcher of the future. This would allow them to let Giambi go and move Posada to first base. I would give up top talent for those two. The Yankees have a ton of young pitching and not many young position players with Cano and Melky's terrible years and Jose Tabata's trade.

I would actually be pretty happy with a trade for Laird, but I would not give up top talent. Even if Posada can catch next year, I think it's unrealistic to think that he'll be able to catch more than 100 games, if that much. That means a lot of time for the backup, and Laird should be much better than Molina next year. Obviously, it would be nice to get Salty or Teagarden, but as you said they would require top talent, and we don't really need a catcher of the future, because we have good catching depth in the minors (Jesus, Cervelli, Romine, Weems, Higashioka).
