Mike will be making a decision on his intentions shortly. Given the significance of this to Mike, I would hope you can respect his desire to be the author of any such announcement consistent with his own time table. A decision of this magnitude should not be the subject of unconfirmed rumors and speculation. Accordingly, I am not going to make any further comment until Mike has made his final decision.
So is he retired or not?
Mussina in my opinion is a clear hall of famer, especially after the great year he had last year. Although not the answer to Pedro Martinez some fans hoped he would be, he was a great pitcher for the Yankees. He was also earned the only big contract for a pitcher that has worked out reasonably well that I can remember. Good luck to him and his family.
He will be sorely missed on the 2009 team but his decision can hardly be a surprise. You can expect to see an Andy Pettitte deal wrapped up soon.

At age 39 he managed to win 20 games and was the Yankees ace and MVP. If he comes back it will go a long way towards solidifying the rotation. However, if he leaves it mean the Yankees will have to fill two rotation spots. I`m not expecting him to pitch like he did this past year if he comes back. However, its not inconceivable that he could be a solid, steady, Jamie Moyer like guy. Today, guys like that have a ton of value.

Pettitte`s ERA has taken a jump this year and lately he has struggled greatly. However, his periphereals are still very good. His GB% and his K/BB are both solid. The real problem for Pettitte has been a high BABIP. His FIP is very good at 3.66 as well. For a one year deal I would love to have Pettitte back. The biggest concern with him is retirement.
Mussina has been incredible all year. He`s always been a control pitcher but he`s had the lowest BB/9 of his career this year. That`s been the biggest difference for him. However, his K/9 and GB% both rose as well. He`s managed to overcome a .322 BABIP and a FB which continues to get slower. Looking back at his 2007 nmbers he seemed to have been getting more than a little unlucky as well. His BABIP was an incredibly high .340. The question with him is whether or not he`ll come back on a one year deal. I may actually be willing to go for two years on him.
Lets assume they sign a big free agent starter and bring back one of these guys. Look at this rotation:
2) FA starter
5) Hughes (?)
This isn't bad but Joba will be starting 2009 in the bullpen. Who is the 5th starter then for the first few months? Aceves? Kennedy? Igawa? Not to mention we don't have much depth in the scenario. I just don't feel comfortable at all in this scenario. If they can sign two top FA starters then I`m fine with it but what are the chances of that happening?

A-Rod and Nady both hit HR's. Nady's seemed like it hit the ceiling of Tropicana Field and A-Rod's tied Mike Schmidt. Is A-Rod the best player to ever play third base? His next HR will give him the most by anyone who has spent significant time at the position.
Joba looked good in his inning and a third as well.

Tonight I am going to take a crack at live blogging the game. The Yanks are trying take two of four from the Rays and in the process win their second straight. On the mound for the Yankees is Mike Mussina, coming off his first shaky start. Whether we like it or not Moose is an important key to the Yankees success this season. It is strange that both games that the Moose is starting Molina is catching. The game will be shown on ESPN 2 and YES. Here are the lineups from Pete Abe.
First Inning: After a dominant first inning setting the Rays down one-two three in a impressive first inning Moose only hurled 8 pitches. WE: 59.1%
The second half of the first inning starts off with a Damon single. Then Jeter grounds into a would be double play but beats it out. "EL COMEDULCE" hits a 2 run shot. A-Rod and Godzilla both ground out to end the inning. Yankees 2. Rays 0. WE: 73.1%
Second Inning: Again the Moose sets em down one two three again throwing only 19 pitches total in the game. Not much else to say. WE: 77.1%
Cano grounded out, Betemit struck out and Melky flied out to make it a 1-2-3 inning for the Rays WE: 73.1%
DEREK JETER WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE GAME AND BETEMIT WAS MOVED TO SHORT.......SHIT PUTTING ENSBURG AT FIRST. SHIT.
Third Inning: The inning starts off with Jonny Gomes hitting a solo home run to make the game 2-1 Yankees. Mussina left the pitch up over the plate and the ruffian crushed it. Next there was a ground out and then a walk. Finally Iwamura and Crawford ground out to end the inning leaving a runner stranded at third. WE: 70.2%
This half inning begins with a double by the sneaky Jose Molina. Damon grounds out. EL COMEDULCE hits a ball "lined like a bullet" into center moving the slugglish Molina over to third bringing A-Rod up with two outs. He grounds out to third ending the inning with two runners stranded. The Yankees are looking pretty good right now and as long Moose can hold up the bombers will be fine. WE: 65.4%
Fourth Inning: Moose gets three quick ground outs only throwing six pitches to end the inning and bring the Bombers up to the plates. WE: 72.5%Starting the inning Matsui grounds out. Then Cano gets "robbed" by the majestic fairy in right Eric Hinske. Finally Betemit grounds out to end the inning. Yankees 2 Rays 1 WE: 67.6%
Fifth Inning: Moose Ks Aybar to start the 5th giving him an impressive total of 2 strike outs. Next batter Moose Ks the Ruffian Jonny Gomes to tie David Cone on the all time strikeout list and giving him his third strikeout of the game. DiFelice hits a two out double to keep the inning alive getting his first career hit off of Mussina. Bartlett flies out to end the inning. Moose has a total of 64 pitches and unlike the last game he is not locating his fastball well. WE: 74.4%
The Melk Man grounds out to short to start the bottom of the fifth. The Yankees should be hitting Hammel harder and it seems their bats are still alseep as they have been all season. Molina hits a slow roller back to the pitcher for the second out. Damon hits a blooper over the head of the shortstop for his second hit of the night bringing up Morgan "Clutch" Ensberg. A nice play by Ayebar ends the inning. CAN WE GET SOME RUNS. Yankees 2. Rays 1 WE:69%
Sixth Inning- This is a big inning for Moose if he can get threw this inning with a good pitch count he can pitch the 7th too and then hand the 8th to Joba. Aki grounded into a soft grounder to the Moose one out. Crawford grounds out to Ensberg. Now lets hope Carlos does not bring the Pena. Michael Kay just called the Pena shift the "Martini glass defense " does he have to make everything gay? After that Flaherty shut him down saying "Not one person in baseball calls that defense that" Kay however disagreed. Cano makes a throwing error on an easy ground ball and Morgan, who is not a cat like Giambi, could not handle that throw. Runner on first B.J. Upton digs in and grounds out to A-Rod. Now can we please produce some runs. WE: 77.1%
Bottom Six. "Bobby Abreu is as sweet as candy" (sorry hits a triple off of the right-center wall past the glove of the fairy Hinske and is now a double away with a cycle. If we don't get this run in I might cry. A-Rod hits a bloop single over Aki's head to drive in the run and make the game a 3-1 contest. Godzilla hits an RBI double driving in A-Rod making this game 4-1 in the Yankees favor. Cano grounds out and moves the Matsui to third with one out. Betemit stuck out swinging. Melky is walked intensionally. Molina ends the inning with a ground out. Finally some runs. Yankees 4. Rays 1. WE: 91.6%Seventh Inning: Big Boy Bruney comes into the game mullet and all. Is it just me or do all pitches have some sort of chain around thier neck...their leader? Jeff Weaver of course. Oh yea live blogging the leadoff hitter hits a long fly ball to right that is caught. Bruney releases his anger on Aybar plunking him in the arm with a 94mph fastball. That was the first base runner Bruney has allowed on all year. The Ruffian Johnny Gomes flies out to center now two outs. The inning is ended by a groundout to Betemit. WE: 95.7% (I like)
TIME TO STRETCH AND TAKE A WIZ.............
(Sorry about the grey text blogger is a little screwy)Around the Leauge Scores:
FLA:7 WSH 6
ATL 1 COL 0
Bottom Seven. Dohmann comes in for the Rays and Damon leads off the inning. UPDATE JETER HAS A STRAINED LEFT QUAD......SHIT. Damon flies out to Crawford. Ensberg gets his fisrt hit as a Yankee with a ground ball up the middle for a single. Bobby walks. Runners on first and second one out. A-Rod strikes out looking on a pitch he thought to be a ball. The replay shows that indeed it was a ball but it was close to the zone. Two down. Godzilla hits an RBI single by Aki driving in Ensberg. 5-1 Yankees. Crap, Farnsworth is warming up. RBI single for Robbie Cano don't ya know...God I need to stop.....6-1 Yankees. Runners on 1st and 3rd now 2 outs. To end the rally Betemit strikes out going 0-4 so far in the game. Their is only one man who can blow this lead and his name.......Kyle. WE: 98.8%
Eighth Inning: Fucking Farnsworth is and and starts off the inning by getting a quick fly out for one out. The Farns strikes out Aki two down. So far in game their have only been two baserunners. The Farns gets a weak ground ball back to him to end the inning. WE: 99.7%
Bottom 8th. Cabrera steps up to the plate against the new Rays pitcher Glover and he grounds out to Pena. Molina strikes out swinging to record the second out of the inning. Damon then grounds out to second and it seems LaTroy is going to come in and work the 9th. WE: 99.7
LaTroy is coming in bearing a 31.50 era and he will get to face the heart of the order of the Rays. Pena squares to bunt which befuddles me. Pena knocks a lead off single and the crowd assaults Hawkins with a cloud of boos. He has not had the best welcome here in New York. He was booed even before throwing a pitch just for wearing #21. Hawkins throws a wild pitch and Pena advances to second. Hawkins makes a jumping play to stop a ground ball and gets the out at first. One out man on second the Majestic Hinske at the plate who walks. Aybar grounds out and moves the runners over. Two outs second and third the Ruffian Jonny Gomes steps up to take a crack at LaTroy he strikes out swinging and LaTroy manages to get out of it.
Thats all for me folks. Time for some NCAA Mens Basketball. Word to your mother.....
YANKEES WIN 6-1 AMEN
Here is the new Joba addias commercial that is airing on Yes

Melky had a good day (2 for 3 with a double, walk and 2 runs) as did his buddy Robinson Cano (3 for 4 with 2 RBI and a run). Shelley Duncan continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 4 with a double. Morgan Ensberg also went 2 for 4 with a double. One player I was really happy with was Francisco Cervelli, who threw out two runners attempting to steal, and showed patience at the plate, going 1 for 1 with two walks.
Moose got roughed up a bit, but I wouldn't start worrying yet. Jeff Karstens pitched well, allowing no runs in three innings of work, giving up two hits and striking out two. Edwar Ramirez allowed an unearned run while striking out one in an inning of work. Steven Jackson pitched a perfect inning. Dan McCutchen pitched a scoreless inning, allowing a hit and striking out a batter. Mark Melancon got the save, pitching a perfect ninth, while getting two groundball outs.

In other news, Derek Jeter and the state of New York came to an agreement over their tax dispute.
